1986 Jetta GLI I finally had to replace the clutch, at 172,000 miles. It has 180,000 now and no rust. I've replaced all the regular maintenance items at relatively long intervals for the parts in question. I've changed the oil every 3K and have had NO engine work needed beyond timing belt replacement, etc. just CV joints, exhaust, struts/shocks, water pump, alternator - the usual litany of things that wear out. I wash it once a week and wax it once a year. Aside from a few parking lot dings it looks like new. I only wish I'd ordered it with A/C. I probably like it so much because I've found a top shelf mechanic who is also a nice guy. He's kept it in great shape for me since 1991 - JOE'S AUTO, 8 Ames Street, Dedham, MA, specializes in VW's, starting with the old Beetles. He gets customers after they've soured on dealer prices and attitude, then he keeps them as long as they keep their VW's. He's the reason I'm looking at a new Passat instead of a Camry or Accord My other car is a loaded 1986 Mitsubishi Gallant with only 75,000 miles I inherited from my Mom. It's a very luxurious slug. When I buy the new Passat it would seem like a no brainer to ditch the old Jetta but it will not be an easy choice.

I thought I e-mailed you from your website, but when I went to check my sent mail I think you might have gotten a blank page. I just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for me and my beautiful 1988 VW Vanagon. It's been such a pleasure having you work on this car the last three years and I know I certainly wouldn't wouldn't have been able to drive the 3,000 miles from Boston to Portland,OR without your help. I feel like I've been spoiled for so long having you take care of my car I don't think I will be able to trust anyone else. I hope all is well with you and again thank you for everything.

I just want to call and thank you again for the work you did today. While I am driving around in the car I don't belive how great it feels and how quiet it is so thank you, thank you thank you. When I got home I checked in my records and I found out that it has been 40,000 miles since the last frot brake job and 20,000 miles since the last tune-up.
